Hydrocarbon Training Program

RSES Leads Industry

RSES has led the industry with the first Hydrocarbon Training Program for HVACR technicians to safely maintain and service systems utilizing flammable refrigerants. Since 1933, RSES has been a leader in training and education for professional HVACR technicians and contractors.

Effective Training for Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons are naturally occurring gases that make good refrigerants. HC refrigerants perform very well, with good capacity and efficiency. They are available for a wide range of applications and have a very low environmental impact in comparison with CFCs, HCFCs, and HFCs. Finally, they are compatible with copper, standard mineral oils, and other common system components.

Even though service procedures for HC refrigerants are similar to those used with other refrigerants, additional safety considerations must be taken into account and proper training obtained to reduce hazards.

Who Needs Training?

Any HVACR technician working on HC refrigerant systems needs to make changes in their service and maintenance procedures and should be trained to safely handle HC refrigerants.

Refrigerants Covered

The Hydrocarbon Training Program covers practices for the following refrigerant families:

  • HC R-290 (propane)
  • HC R-600a (isobutane)
  • HC R-441A (a blend*)
  • HC R-170 (ethane)
  • HFC R-32 (difluoromethane)

*R-441A, also known as HRC 188C, is a blend made up of 3.1% ethane (R-170), 54.8% propane (R-290), 6.0% isobutane (R-600a), and 36.1% butane (R-600).

Training Options Available

RSES offers a diverse range of training options, ensuring participants retain and put into practice what they learn.
